Jäänmurto- ja hinaaja palvelun tarkoituksena on varmistaa sujuva alusliikenne Helsingin Sataman alueilla. Helsingin Satama on Suomen johtava yleissatama, jonka liikenne jakautuu matkustaja- ja tavaraliikenteeseen. Helsingin Satamassa on vuodessa n. 8000 aluskäyntiä.
